Meshell Ndegeocello, Marc Anthony Thompson of Chocolate Genius Incorporated, Tamar-kali, Carl Hancock Rux and legendary John Sebastian are the latest artists to join the line up for the Tuesday, May 15, multi-media concert event in Albany.  This concerned group of New York-based artists will participate in a rally and to educate the public on the dangers of hydraulic fracturing and call on Governor Cuomo to ban the controversial natural gas drilling process in New York State. Musicians include: Medeski Martin & Wood, Natalie Merchant, Citizen Cope, The Felice Brothers, Joan Osborne, Tracy Bonham, Toshi Reagon, Dan Zanes, Ida, The Horse Flies, and The Ahkwesasne Women Singers. Academy Award nominated actor Mark Ruffalo and Academy Award winning actress Melissa Leo will be official hosts of the evening. All of the artists involved make New York State their home and are committed to keeping it fracking-free. The official rally will begin at 4:00 on The West Capitol Lawn and will be followed by the concert at The Egg: Center For Performing Arts at 7:00.

Academy Award winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer, Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) will capture the musical performances, films, speeches and testimonials given by scientists, authors, economists, politicians and activists, on hydraulic fracturing.

This unique show is the brainchild of New Yorkers Against Fracking, a new coalition of diverse grassroots, state-wide organizations that have joined together with the common goal of banning hydrofracking in New York State. These organizations agree that this extreme gas drilling method will cause irreversible damage to the environment and public health.
Acclaimed ecologist and author Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D. (Raising Elijah: Protecting Our Children in an Age of Environmental Crisis) will be on hand to share her experience and expertise on the issue. Steingraber is internationally recognized for her work uncovering and understanding the ways in which chemical contaminants in the air, water, and food endanger human health. An in demand public speaker and cancer survivor, she first gained recognition with her modern classic, Living Downstream, which was recently adapted to a biographical film of the same name. She used the prize money she received for her 2011 Heinz Award to help form New Yorkers Against Fracking.

Shale Gas Hydrofracking (Fracking) is a means of injecting millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals under enormous pressure into dense shale rock formations to release natural gas. This process has caused major environmental damage in the communities where it has been allowed to take place. Opponents of fracking cite leaks and accidents that ruin groundwater, contaminating it with carcinogens, neurotoxins, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and natural gas itself. They also point out that the drilling causes massive land scarring, air pollution, truck traffic, and miles and miles of pipeline construction.
“Fracking is wrong,” says Steingraber. “Sooner or later, steel and cement disintegrate. Sooner or later, gas wells open portals of contamination between drinking water aquifers and the toxic materials held in the bedrock below. Doing fracking ‘right’ simply means building time bombs with longer fuses. There are no places in New York and no children in New York that we are willing to sacrifice.”

“I’m terrified of what may happen to my home state if hydraulic fracturing begins,” says Natalie Merchant. “Significant parts of rural New York will be sacrificed for relatively short-term gain in exchange for long-term degradation and contamination. Our most critical resource: WATER, both on the surface and underground will be endangered.”

Presented by New Yorkers Against Fracking in Partnership with the Finger Lakes CleanWaters Initiative, Inc.
This concert is powered in part by the wind due to a Wind Energy Donation compliments of Community Energy.

Dear Friends,

In less then 48 hours, the sun will rise in the far Pacific, and one of the last best chances to educate our civilization about climate change will be underway.

On 5/5, all around the world, we’ll be Connecting the Dots on climate change. The day will begin in the Marshall Islands, where our friends are taking their cameras underwater for a rally against the backdrop of their endangered coral reef. And we need you to join in — the images we collect in the next hours will be the bank on which we draw as we continue to wage the political fight to cut carbon emissions.

If you don’t yet know which local event you’re joining, click here to get involved: www.climatedots.org

We desperately need to put real human faces on climate change — to make sure that people understand it’s not an abstraction and a future threat, but a very present and very real crisis. And a crisis with solutions — in many places people are putting up green dots of hope, at their solar panels and windmills. (At my mom’s retirement home the residents are heading out to dig a big new community garden!)

So please: if you can spare an hour or two for the planet on 5/5, make sure you go to climatedots.org to find out where the nearest action is, and make sure you call a few friends and get them to come with you. We won’t solve climate change in a single day — but if we don’t manage to show our fellow citizens that it’s a problem, we’ll never solve it.

And here’s the thing — you’ll have a good time. On too many occasions we ask you to do really hard things, like get arrested. This action is crucial but simple — just lend your body for a little while to make the most important point we can make right now.

We’re asking everyone, at every local event, to take a photo of their “climate dot” and upload it to our website — and we’ll assemble those images into a global mosaic that puts a real human face on climate change. Our crew at 350.org will do everything we can to deliver your photos and stories to the media and decision-makers the world over. We can’t let our elected officials pretend that this crisis is still in the future, and we’ll make sure our actions on 5/5 are a crucial first step to get global leaders to connect the dots on climate change.

Almost three years ago, on October 24, 2009, 350.org held our first international day of action. That day was like a global teach-in that helped the world understand a new fact — that 350 is the safe upper level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and that getting back below 350 is the greatest challenge humanity now faces.

This year, our task is a bit different: now we need to to show the world that the impacts of climate change are already being felt — and that there is a powerful movement waking up to connect the dots. This Saturday, some places around the planet the rain will be falling, and some places the sun will be shining — but everywhere on planet earth we’ll be connecting the dots, and we hope you’ll be a big part of it. Please join us.

With gratitude,

Bill McKibben

P.S. Along with that photo, which is of paramount importance, it would be great if you could spread the word with whatever social networks you use. Email your friends, post on Facebook, tweet — do whatever you do to reach your community. To keep up to date with the latest goings-on worldwide, follow 350 on our Facebook, and on Twitter, where we’ll be posting updates all day. And, if you happen to tweet, use the hashtag #ConnectTheDots to keep in touch with everyone else taking action around the world.

Dear New Yorkers,

Yesterday, with old friends and new allies, I helped deliver your petition signature and more than 200,000 others calling on Governor Cuomo to ban fracking in New York.

We couldn’t have done it without you. More than 65,000 of those 200,000 signatures came from WFP supporters like you. Your signatures helped us send a powerful message to Governor Cuomo: fracking is not safe and should be banned from New York.

Karen Scharff, WFP Executive Committee

This stack of boxes is not the first public outcry against fracking. The DEC collected more than 66,000 public comments on its latest environmental impact statement — five times as many as it received for the first draft — and reports say most of them called for a ban.

Despite the grassroots pressure to end fracking, we still face big challenges. The oil and gas barons who are pushing for this dangerous process to go forward have nearly limitless money. And they’re not above using it to subvert the will of the people.

Thanks,

-Karen Scharff, Working Family Party (WFP) Executive Committee

(Woodstock, NY) – Radio Woodstock and world-renowned guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers Band, The Dead) present the 8th annual Mountain Jam Festival at Hunter Mountain, NY from Thursday, May 31 through Sunday, June 3, 2012. Mountain Jam will welcome its strongest lineup of talent yet with approximately 50 bands on 4 stages over the course of the 4-day Festival. Discounted early-bird VIP, 3-Day, 4-Day, and Camping Festival Passes are on-sale now at MountainJam.com.

Legendary British international recording artist, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist for Traffic, Blind Faith, and Spencer Davis Group, Steve Winwood will perform as one of Mountain Jam’s 2012 headliners.  Gov’t Mule will return as a headliner for their 8th consecutive Mountain Jam.

Long time Mountain Jam favorite Michael Franti & Spearhead will grace the Festival stage for their 7th straight appearance and will once again perform an intimate acoustic set in the Awareness Village. Famed hip-hop/neo soul group, and official house band of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, will make their inaugural appearance on the Mountain in 2012. Singer-songwriter, producer, and judge of NBC’s The Sing-Off, Ben Folds, will reunite his alt-rock trio Ben Folds Five after an 11-year hiatus for only a few shows this summer including a stop at Mountain Jam. Sacred steel/gospel/southern rock supergroup, The Word, will bring together the talents of Robert Randolph, John Medeski, and the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther and Cody Dickinson, Chris Chew) at this year’s Festival.

Also on the bill for Mountain Jam 8: New Orleans funk of Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, bluegrass with Travelin’ McCourys ft. Keller Williams, funk jazz of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, folk rock with Dawes (returning for the second consecutive year), Austin-based guitar-slinger Gary Clark Jr., Grammy-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, indie-pop group GIVERS, funk/soul/R&B singer and Daptone recording artist Charles Bradley, and many more.

Mountain Jam 2012 will once again offer early Thursday admission with a Festival Pre-Party featuring the funk jazz of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Late Night with Bustle In Your Hedgerow (featuring Joe Russo (drummer for Furthur), Dave Dreiwitz of Ween, Marco Benevento and Scott Metzger) playing energized versions of Led Zeppelin classics, island-infused drum n’ bass/gospel/soul of Zach Deputy, and the rock power trio Planet of the Abts (featuring Matt Abts and Jorgen Carlsson of Gov’t Mule).

New in 2012, Mountain Jam will offer a limited number of Luxury Pre-Pitched Tents on the Mountain atop the Concert Field and Awareness Village. Each campsite provides room for up to six campers and includes a pre-pitched canvas tent, cots, tables, rugs, and a lantern, along with an exclusive lounge for Premium Camping Villagers. Pre-Pitched Tents may be reserved at MountainJam.com.

The festival’s forward-thinking Awareness Village will once again host a special acoustic stage, as well as exhibits from not-for-profit organizations and environmental groups, children’s entertainment, performance and sculpture art, physical and spiritual healing, a beer and wine garden, and much more. The Festival will also be continuing its greening efforts with recycling, carbon offsets, and free water refills to reduce the usage of plastic water bottles.

Originally conceived in 2005 as a single-day celebration of Radio Woodstock’s 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has blossomed into a four-day, multi-stage event, featuring onsite camping, and one of the northeast’s most pristine natural amphitheaters. The Festival received a Pollstar Award nomination in 2011 in the category of Best Music Festival. The New York Post called Mountain Jam one of the “summer’s best music festivals” in 2009, and Rolling Stone magazine listed the Festival in its list of “Top 8 Best Fests” of 2008.

Over the years, Mountain Jam has hosted some of the top names in live music, including The Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh & Friends, Bob Weir & RatDog, My Morning Jacket, Warren Haynes Band, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ray LaMontagne, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Les Claypool, Dave Mason, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Hold Steady, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Hot Tuna, Coheed & Cambria, Drive-By Truckers, Dr. Dog, Medeski Martin & Wood, Mike Gordon, G. Love & Special Sauce, Ozomatli, Galactic, Umphrey’s McGee and Robert Randolph & The Family Band, among many others. Last year, the festival presented Levon Helm’s 70th Birthday Jubilee with very special guests Warren Haynes, Donald Fagen, Ray LaMontagne, Sam Bush, Steve Earle, Patterson & David Hood, Jackie Greene and Allison Moorer.

The Hunter Mountain Lodge will provide fans with 24-hour access to both food and indoor bathrooms, while onsite camping and a variety of nearby hotels, lodges and ski chalets will ensure that all attendees have a wide variety of accommodations to choose from. This year Mountain Jam will also offer expanded VIP options, including its highly acclaimed “Tavern in the Woods” featuring private bar area and Hammock Grove, as well as shaded hospitality tents, early arrival access at no additional charge, private camping areas, and a variety of gourmet food and beverages. Mountain Jam will also offer options for VIP on-site lodging and a VIP RV area on the Mountain.

Following the sellout of Mountain Jam’s Presale tickets, Festival Passes are now available at Early Bird prices for $150, and with camping for $180. For an additional $25, attendees can enjoy early admission to the campgrounds on Thursday afternoon and music starting at 8 pm.  A limited number of VIP Festival Passes are now on sale for $440, which includes Thursday admission and VIP camping. Strangefolk

 Music News  Comments Off
Apr 052012

At the heart of Strangefolk’s songwriting is a seamless blend of narrative lyrical content and inventive melody. Rock, folk, blues, and bluegrass influences converge to create an instantly recognizable sound, which keeps Strangefolk’s listeners moving from start to finish. When punctuated with Strangefolk’s trademark three-part harmonies and soaring lead guitars, the band’s unique songwriting ability develops a natural avenue for the band to extend themselves in a live setting. The result is one of the more gratifying live music experiences around. Their latest project, Coast to Coast (2002) showcases the band’s depth, variety, and continued growth as songwriters and musicians.

Originally formed as an acoustic duo “Strange Folk” in 1991, Strangefolk (now one word) added bass and drums within a year and took to playing the bars in and around the vibrant musical community of Burlington, Vermont. The band rounded out its sound further in 2000 by adding keyboards to the lineup. Strangefolk has since built a national following based on the impressive sales from four studio CD releases (LoreWeightless in WaterA Great Long While, and Open Road), and one live release (Coast to Coast), a rigorous touring schedule, and an annual festival that attracts thousands which the band has funded, promoted, and hosted for ten years called Strangefolk’s Garden of Eden.

Leftover Salmon

 Fresh Grooves  Comments Off
Apr 052012

The sound of Colorado’s legendary Leftover Salmon is unmistakable: fluid, loose-limbed, and simultaneously rootsy and daring. Fusing an unrivaled improvisational fervor to a dizzying combination of bluegrass, Cajun, funk, Southern rock, boogie, Caribbean, Latin, and jazz influences, Leftover Salmon has earned a legion of diehard fans, critical accolades, and a reputation as one of the most exciting, engaging concert experiences to ever hit the road. The origins of Leftover Salmon are as intriguing as their name. The group was born in Boulder, Colorado in 1989, as the result of a merger between Vince Herman (from Cajun/Calypso/jugband The Salmonheads) and Drew Emmitt and Mark Vann (of progressive bluegrass Left Hand String Band.)

Leftover self-released their first album, Bridges to Bert in 1992 and the live Ask the Fish in 1995. They were then signed to Hollywood records, who released Euphoria in 1997 and the widely-heralded Nashville Sessions in 1999. The recording of The Nashville Sessions was a star studded affair that paired Leftover with an A-list of Nashville’s most notable session players, including Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Reese Wynans, John Cowan, and Sally Van Meter. Country legends Earl Scruggs, Waylon Jennings and Lucinda Williams also contributed, as did many of the bands friends from the road, including Blues Traveler’s John Popper, John Bell from Widespread Panic and Big Head Todd’s Todd Park Mohr.

In 2002, Leftover Salmon signed with Compass Records label and released Live (pronounced “liv”), a live album designed in tribute to the late Mark Vann. Vann urged the band to continue after being diagnosed with melanoma, and since his untimely passing in spring of 2002, they continued to tour relentlessly, playing countless clubs, theatres and appearing at every festival known to mankind, wowing their audiences with their crazy antics and powerful musical mélange.

2003 saw the band take part in a critically acclaimed tour with bluegrass giants the Del McCoury Band and released an album with the rock band Cracker titled O’ Cracker Where Art Thou?, release on David Lowey’s Pitch A Tent label. Similarly, the band can play both folk and rock festivals, and they’ve performed in elegant theaters and in grungy rock clubs. Leftover Salmon is the rare band with a broad enough sound and a large enough repertoire to shape its set list to fit any crowd and any venue.

2004 brought a new studio album self titled Leftover Salmon released on Compendia Records. For this album, the band broke its pattern of inviting scores of musical guests to participate. This time, Leftover Salmon decided to focus on their own special ensemble play. The only instrumental guest was the producer Bill Payne of Little Feat, who adds a spicy piano track to “Whispering Waters”. “How could you have Bill Payne in the studio and pass up the chance to get him to play on your record,” Vince Herman points out. Singer K.C. Groves adds harmony on “Woody Guthrie,” but otherwise the band goes it alone.

The end of 2004 also brought an end to Leftover Salmon. A statement was posted to the bands website on 6/15/2004 that read: We are aware of the rumors that have been circulating over the past few weeks and would like to let everyone know what’s going on so there is no confusion. The band is indeed going to take a break at the end of this year. After years of touring everyone is ready for some time off to spend with their families and to pursue solo projects that Salmon’s busy schedule has not permitted. As of right now the future of Leftover Salmon is uncertain but the band is not breaking up, just taking a break. Mark wanted us to continue after he left the band and that’s what we did. We have toured just as hard, rebuilt the band and put out a new record. Now we feel that we can take a break without letting him down.

We’re all very proud of our latest release, Leftover Salmon, and after experiencing so many ups and downs, it feels right to step back while on this high. We want to thank the Salmon family, our friends, and especially our fans as this dream would have never come true if it wasn’t for you. We look forward to seeing your faces as we continue to perform in various projects and hope you will all support our decisions and future ventures. This band has created a lifetime of memories for us and that is something that can never go away. The Festivaaal will go on. We will be performing several shows and festivals throughout the summer and play our 3rd annual Halloween celebration at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on Saturday October 30th this year. After that, the final show will be New Year’s Eve, which marks 15 years to the date of the first Leftover Salmon performance. We are excited to reach such a milestone and hope all who can, will join us this New Year’s. Check our web site for details-to-come.

On the early morning hours of January 1st 2005 the band left the stage at the Fox Theatre in Boulder Colorado leaving behind them the band Leftover Salmon which had been apart of their lives and so many fans for the past 15 years.

2007, 27 months after it’s last performance a press release from the band stated that it would return that summer for a handful of reunion shows. The line up was that same as it was when it ended in 2004 with the exception of Jeff Sipe. Jeff who was the bands long time drummer had left in 2000 to pursue other career options. Jeff rounded out the line up that would perform a few summer festivals and grace the stage of the bands famous home state venue Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The first unofficial performance took place at the Telluride Bluegrass festival on June 24 billed as Drew Emmitt, Vince Herman and Friends.

With downloads available of all the 2007 summer performances and two Colorado holiday dates announced around New Years the bands future is still uncertain, but by no means over. Stay tuned as these musicians will surly be playing music in some format for years to come.

Cornmeal

 Featured Artists  Comments Off
Apr 042012

Formed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. 10 years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire. While steeped in the tradition of the past, Cornmeal continues to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance.

In the beginning of 2010, Cornmeal released their first live album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, an album that pays tribute to the fans. For the first six years, Cornmeal performed each and every Wednesday in Chicago to small yet loyal crowds. Throughout the winters of 2007-2009, Cornmeal returned to Chicago to pay homage to that tradition. The album is for the fans as a thank you for all the years of dedication, for believing in Cornmeal, and for creating a wonderful community for them to come home to. The album was recorded live throughout the winter of 2009 at Martyrs’ in Chicago, IL. Unlike Cornmeal’s three previous albums, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams that showcase the immense talent and connectivity that have gained them so much fan appeal from coast to coast.

With the release of their debut album “In The Kitchen” (2001 Livin’ Live records), Cornmeal secured its place as one of the top bands in its genre. 2003′s “Tales from Magic Stone Mountain” (Livin’ Live records) garnered much critical attention and became a staple on College and AAA top 10 lists throughout the country. In May of 2006, Cornmeal released their third album, “Feet First”, which became proof positive that Cornmeal’s tenure on the road brought on an honest and mature sound. Produced by guitarist Kris Nowak and bassist Chris Gangi, “Feet First” features a strong confidence in songwriting, musicianship and the ability of this band to stylistically ride the fence and bring it back home without missing a step.

While playing a blend of high profile venues, jam-band and bluegrass festivals to thousands throughout the region, the band has shared the stage with such highly acclaimed national acts as THE DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET, JOHN HARTFORD, THE DEL McCOURY BAND, LITTLE FEAT, LEFTOVER SALMON, TONY RICE, YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, DARK STAR ORCHESTRA, moe, SAM BUSH and UMPHREY’S McGEE. They have performed at some of the most high profile festivalin the country including Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Magnolia Fest, 10K Lakes, Wakarusa, Summercamp, DelFest and many others. They pride themselves on the energy they put forth each night creating an unrivalled live performance that continues to shape itself into a energentic one of a kind experience. Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I proves that Cornmeal continues to be a band to watch out for. Every show they play is a unique experience that leaves fans begging for more.
